Several
Weeks Before The Move
1. Arrange for copies of medical, dental
and other professional records to be sent to your new location.
2. Obtain copies of eyeglass and any medical prescriptions.
3. Arrange to cancel memberships to clubs or organizations
4. Ask schools for copies of children's reports and records.
5. Contact schools in new location for brochures and information.
6. Contact moving and shipping companies for quotations.
7. Obtain information on 'housing allowance' for new location
8. If some items are going into storage, this is a good time to make the list
9. Make a list of those who need to be contacted with your change of address:
Ø Relatives and Friends
Ø Credit Card Companies
Ø Insurance Companies
Ø Magazine Subscriptions
Ø Investment Companies
Ø Colleges
Ø Lawyer/ Solicitor
One Month Before The Move
1. Having agreed the cost, make arrangements with the moving company and book a
date.
2. Make travel arrangements with airlines, car hire and hotel reservations.
3. Take an inventory of the items to be moved for insurance purposes.
4. Make a record of serial numbers of all electrical items.
5. If you are transporting pets, check with your veterinarian about shipping
pets and arrange to have the record of their inoculations.
6. Check with your bank regarding accounts.
7. Begin using up food in freezer and cupboards.
8. Set up a cheque account in the area where you are moving.
9. Arrange to have vaccinations to comply with health regulations for the
country you are moving to.
One Week,
to Three Days Before The Move
1. Have appliances serviced.
2. Have children choose toys they will want to take with them on trip
3. Begin packing ( If you have decided to pack some items)
4. Defrost freezer
5. Collect Items from dry cleaners
6. Check you have settled all outstanding bills.
7. Cancel home delivery service of milk, newspapers, video's, etc.
8. If your property is being rented, arrange for complete clean throughout.
9. Arrange for gardener if necessary.
The Day Before The Move
1. The packers usually arrive the day before the movers. Make sure there is
someone to supervise the packers.
2. Defrost and clean refrigerator.
3. Collect all house keys and arrange who is to have them when you leave.
4. Finish packing personal items.
5. Contact the police or a friend if your property is to be empty for a period
of time.
6. Leave a welcome card for people moving into your old home.
7. Arrange for food and beverages on moving day.
8. Try to get a good nights sleep
The Day of The Move
1. Have an early and light breakfast.
2. Make sure children have a special job, however small, to take care of on the
day of the move. This will help make them feel involved.
3. Check all spaces, cupboards and fitted wardrobes are empty
4. Check the movers inventory, and keep a copy.
5. Search all rooms and throw away perishable items
6. Collect all items you intend carrying such as important documents, credit
cards, currency and jewelry.
7. Turn off the water heater.
8. Lock-up and hand over the keys of the property.
