Packing
Advice
Although the idea of moving to a new home can be very exciting the problem of
packing is something the majority of us hate. A good plan for packing will help
you find everything when you arrive at your destination and assist you in
helping to get settled. Be ruthless about what you decide to transport and what
you agree to discard.
- Save money.
Pack some items yourself, but remember to use good quality packing materials.
- Padding and
Containers. Gather newspapers, tissue
paper, corrugated cardboard and any other wrapping such as bubble-wrap. Plus
large felt tip pens or Magic Markers. Do not use grocery boxes from the super
market, as they will not be strong enough.
- Devise a system.
Label the boxes for each room in your new home clearly and label each room.
Label what is going into which cupboards and onto what shelves where possible.
( Example: 2nd Floor Room 3) Also make a list of the contents of
each box. If available give the movers a plan of the new home.
- When to Pack.
Begin to pack well ahead of your
move. Packing often takes a longer time than expected. Keep a special
area, away from the children but close to an exit where packed boxes can be
stored. Any items that you do not need on a daily basis should be packed
first.
- Prepare for
Packing. Take mirrors, pictures, and
decorative items off the walls. Empty cupboards and cabinets where less used
items are stored and pack these first.
- Inventory.
Keep a clear list and double check with the movers foreman concerning existing
damage to your goods.
- Children.
Let children pack and label a few of their
own boxes. If the children are young try and make them feel that you are
embarking on a new adventure.
- Photographs and
Video. Make a video of your old home
and include friends and neighbours. Pack some photographs of your family.
Younger children often need photographs for projects at school.
- Electrical Items.
Where possible small appliances and
electronic equipment should be repacked in the boxes, which they came in and
taped securely.
- Clothes.
Use wardrobe boxes to make this packing quick and simple. Pack all drawers
with wrapped clothes, and soft items.
- When Wrapping.
Be careful when wrapping certain items such as porcelain as this can be marked
by newspaper ink, unless first wrapped in another substance.
- Fragile Items.
Clearly mark these boxes FRAGILE and specify that they should be loaded last.
Place plenty of loose packing such as Styrofoam, or scrunched up newspaper
into gaps and crevices to prevent the items knocking together. Never place
heavy boxes on top of those marked FRAGILE.
- Legs, Nuts and
Bolts. Keep all furniture keys (labeled)
in a safe place. Remove the legs off furniture where possible and attach in a
plastic bag. Keep nuts and bolts from beds in easily accessible plastic bag.
- Moving large
items. Make sure the movers have a
trolley for these items. Load these items first and distribute weight evenly.
Check the manual for any special moving instructions of appliances or
electronic equipment.
- Fridge, Cooker
and Washing Machine. Allow time to
clean these items a couple of days before the movers arrive and have these
appliances disconnected by a reputable tradesperson.
- T.V and Stereo.
Keep speakers apart as they contain
powerful magnets, which can permanently damage your television’s picture.
- Carpets and Rugs.
These items should be rolled up and
secured with tape or thin rope.
- Arrangements for
Loading. Make a
plan for packing such as packing last the items you use most. Arrange the
boxes to be unpacked first to go into the truck last. Keep the kettle, cups
and a selection of towels, soap and bedding handy.
- Avoid Injury.
When lifting only do so with your knees bent, and keep your back straight!
- Own Suitcase etc.
Keep all items that you intend to
transport yourself in a safe place and away from the packers. Inform the
supervisor of the packing team about these items.
- Stress.
Remember packing is a stressful time for not
only you, but also your children and pets
- Tool Box.
This should go in last. Don’t forget picture hooks. Keep Room Labels and
Sticky tape for fixing on doors when you arrive at your destination.
